Alabama and Federal Law Update
|
The law is constantly changing and officers are legally responsible for understanding and applying these changes. Unfortunately, most departments are not adequately equipped to provide their officers with legal updates in a manner that can be immediately applied on the job. Not knowing the latest law can adversely impact cases and can subject officers to civil and even criminal penalties. Every officer needs a legal refresher course once each year.
If you have not received training in this area recently, you need to attend this course. Topics covered will include major federal and state cases involving search and seizure, confessions, right to counsel, eyewitness identification and civil/criminal liability.

Building Community Support and Public Awareness of Potential Terrorist Activity in Your Jurisdiction
|
Because of the location of dams, power plants, nuclear facilities, chemical storage and manufacturing sites in rural areas, as well as numerous potential targets, more training and coordination are urgently needed to teach small town Police Departments how to assess and categorize threats in their community. This seminar is designed to explore ways of opening communication channels and networking with governmental agencies , the military and corporate security to provide information about terrorist groups, their philosophies, capabilities and targets, then to periodically update their contacts with available information about terrorist activity in general and specifically threats/targets in their area. The program includes methods of surveying potential threats, communication modes and sources of information to augment the communication program.

Civil and Criminal Liability for Front Line Officers and Supervisors
|
Officers not only need to know the latest changes in the Constitutional and Alabama law, they also need an understanding of both civil and criminal liability facing them on and off the job.
This course is given from a unique perspective; that is, from a former prosecutor who has investigated over 50 Civil Rights complaints and who has worked as an expert witness in defending officers and departments.
Items covered include state and federal liability, including both civil and criminal laws. Perhaps most important to both the department and officer is the advice for prevention of liability and what action to take in anticipation of liability.

Interviewing the Suspected Terrorist
|
Because the local officer, as first responder, will often be the first to interview a captured terrorist, and because federal assistance may be hours or more away, it is vital that the interviewer understand the most effective means of gaining information. This seminar provides that training by beginning with an overview of the religious and political philosophies of terrorist groups currently operating in the U.S. in order to establish a reference for why terrorists engage in violent actions and what they hope to accomplish through violence. It then reviews the most effective techniques for interviewing terrorists following constitutional guidelines. The seminar includes roll playing and offers a variety of effective, legal methods by which information may be obtained.

Protection of Officers, Their Families, Victims and Witnesses From Terrorist Activity
|
Surveys during our terrorism seminars over the past few years have consistently shown that police officers, for all of their training in law enforcement, are not familiar with or comfortable in their understanding of basic techniques of protecting themselves and their families. This is one of the most frequently requested topics we receive for seminars. This seminar presents the philosophy and history of terrorist groups' attempts to target law enforcement, government employees and their families. It draws upon site protection, executive protection and counter-surveillance techniques to present a comprehensive and workable plan for officers to protect their families, themselves and those with whom they work from likely terrorist actions.

Settling Disputes in the Workplace
|
Officers, like others, resolve disputes on a daily basis. What is unique to law enforcement, however, is that officers settle disputes on the job, at work and at home; in other words, like it or not, officers are engaged in full-time dispute resolution.
While disputes do get resolved, officers with proper training have demonstrated an ability to handle personal and organizational disputes with far greater success than those who just wing it or rely on their instincts.
This course provides a systematic method of resolving personal, organizational and field disputes from an instructor who has been involved in dispute resolution for over fifteen years and who has taught both practical and college-level courses on the subject.
Participants will not just be exposed to the theory of dispute resolution, but will engage in case studies and practical exercises designed to demonstrate to each learner the advantages of applying dispute resolution techniques to virtually every conflict they encounter on or off the job.

The New Plain Feel Doctrine
|
This is a course that may be incorporated as an optional block in the Alabama and Federal Law Update.
It may also be configured as a stand-alone course and will be both practical and educational for the officers involved, in that scenarios will be set up so that each participating officer will conduct "plain feel" searches under controlled conditions.
This will insure that the officers can testify from experience that narcotics had been previously discovered as "immediately apparent" using legally accepted "plain feel" techniques.
Departments whose officers have not had extensive "plain feel" experience should definitely have this training.

In non technical language, this seminar explores system vulnerabilities, the capabilities and recent activities of cyber-terrorists, and provides suggested methods of protection for departments and for agencies within their jurisdictions.

This is a vital course for newer officers and a necessary refresher for more experienced officers.

White Collar and Computer Crime Investigation

As criminals become more sophisticated, those officers who are or will be assigned to these investigations must constantly upgrade their skills. From simple check cases to identity theft, the schemes are becoming more complex with each new change in technology.

This course can be tailored as needed to include computer crimes, from hacking to auction fraud. Computer crime is perhaps the most rapidly growing criminal enterprise and the one which will undoubtedly call for the most investigative skill in the future.
All officers who are currently involved in the investigation of white collar crime or who intend to do so in the future should attend this course.
